(Photo: Earth Hour Global) MFA will be switching off or dimming external and common lighting of our premises for one hour on 28 March 2009, in support of Earth Hour 2009. MFA's efforts are part of Singapore's participation in the global climate change campaign organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Earth Hour 2009 aims to show individuals or businesses that it is possible to take action on global warming. Speaking on Earth Hour, Professor S Jayakumar, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security said, "Climate change is one of the most serious long-term challenges facing humankind. An enduring global solution must involve the combined effort of governments, businesses, NGOs, and individuals. "Earth Hour 2009 will help promote public awareness of the importance of addressing the issue of climate change. It will also present a unique opportunity for individuals to express their support for environmental protection." In response to media queries on MFA's support for Earth Hour 2009, the MFA Spokesman said, "Earth Hour is a laudable initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise international awareness about the need to take action on climate change. In support of this initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will participate in the event. During Earth Hour, which is from 2030 hours to 2130 hours on 28 March 2009, only the minimum lighting required for operations and security will be switched on." |
