Consular Services

Singaporeans in distress overseas can seek consular assistance during and after regular office hours. However, please note that the nearest Singapore Mission at your destination may not necessarily be accredited to the country you are in. If there is no Singapore Mission nearby, you may wish to call the MFA Duty Officer in Singapore at (65) 6379-8800.

Assistance for Singaporeans

What can our Consular Officer assist in?

  • Provide you with information, advice and consular assistance.

  • Issue you with an emergency travel document if you have lost your Singapore passport overseas.
    Note: It is an Immigration requirement that you report the loss of your passport to the local police and furnish our Mission with a copy of this report.

  • Contact your relatives or friends to request them to send you emergency funds for your repatriation or other necessary emergency expenses.

  • Notify your next-of-kin in the event you are injured abroad.

  • Notify your next-of-kin in the event of your arrest or detention.

  • Visit a Singapore citizen who has been arrested or imprisoned and monitor that due process under the judicial system of that country is accorded to him or her.

  • Help to obtain a list of officially registered local lawyers and translation services where this is available.

  • Assist in making the arrangements for the return to Singapore of the remains and personal belongings of a deceased Singaporean overseas.

  • Help you during emergencies such as natural disasters or civil disorder in the foreign country.

What can our Consular Officer not  assist in?

  • Pay your medical, hospital, legal, accommodation, travel or other bills.

  • Provide loans or cash your cheques.

  • Post bails or pay fines on your behalf.

  • Intervene in the judicial process of a foreign country or ignore local laws.

  • Intervene in or act as an intermediary in disputes which are of a civil nature.

  • Provide legal advice or initiate court proceedings on your behalf.

  • Act as your guarantor or sponsor.

  • Arrange for your accommodation or for your work.

  • Provide translation, mail-forwarding, telephone, fax/telex or other personal services.

For urgent consular assistance (e.g. for cases of overseas arrest, repatriation, illness, accidents, natural disasters, etc)

Please note that the MFA Duty Office is closed daily from 12 midnight to 7.00am (Singapore time). During this period, overseas emergency cases will be attended to by a Duty Officer.
For non-emergency consular matters, please call during our office hours from 7.00am to 12 midnight (Singapore time).

During office hours, you may also call the following numbers to reach the officers manning the various country desks. Please call the main line (6379 8000) if the officers are not at their desks when you call.

Legalisation of Documents

Legalisation of Government Documents | Legalisation of Non-Government Documents | Fees Chargeable | Address & Office Hours

Legalisation of Government Documents

All documents issued by the Singapore Government Departments (eg. Registry of Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates and Educational Certificates from local government schools) in their original text will be directly legalised by MFA. However, computer generated documents eg. Registrar of Marriage Search, Certificate of Making Decree Nisi Absolute, Adoption Petition, Business Profile from ACRA etc, must be certified by the issuing department first before presenting to MFA for legalisation.

For legalisation of true copies, please present the photocopy together with the original document for verification.

Legalisation of Non-Government Documents

Non-government documents (foreign / private / company documents) must be first referred to a Notary Public (any law firm offering notarial services) for notarisation and then to the Singapore Academy of Law (1 Supreme Court Lane, Level 4, Singapore 178879, Tel: 63324388 / Fax: 63344940) for certification before presenting documents at MFA for legalisation.

Commercial documents such as Invoices, Bills of Sales, Certificates of Origin, Fumigation certificates, etc should be certified or seen by any of the four Chambers of Commerce (International, Chinese, Indian & Malay) or the Singapore Manufacturers' Association before presenting to MFA for legalisation.

A fee of S$10/- is chargeable for each legalisation of document, payable by Nets or Cashcard.
